THE Port of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) had a total throughput of 789,776 TEU in March, beating the previous monthly record from October 2020 by 34,339 TEU.
The March total was a 40.8 per cent increase during a time when the Covid crisis largely brought global trade to a halt.
Total import volumes were 393,159 TEU, a year-on-year increase of 44.8 per cent. Loaded exports volumes fell 7.4 per cent, but exports of empty containers in March grew 78 per cent.
'This reflects the need to reposition empty containers around the globe to provide the equipment necessary to support the strong cargo demand,' said the Port Authority.
