PORT Cork has taken delivery of two Liebherr post-Panamax ship-to-shore (STS) container gantry cranes for the Cork Container Terminal (CCT) in Ireland that is scheduled to open for business later this year.
Construction on CCT commenced in June 2019, with the EUR80 million (US$87 million) project initially offering a 360-metre quay with 13 metres alongside, plus a 13.5-hectare terminal and associated buildings, reported London's Container Management.
While the port handled 240,000 TEU last year, this is expected to grow by 37 per cent to 330,000 TEU over the next decade, in part due to the new terminal.
The Port of Cork engineering manager Henry Kingston said: 'Our first-hand experience of the top quality of Liebherr products and the first class after-sales service back were key factors influencing the decision to choose Liebherr for this project.'
The cranes were built less than 100 kilometres from Cork in Killarney, County Kerry, and are being assembled by local crane specialists William O'Brien Group, under the supervision of Liebherr engineers.
Liebherr Container Cranes managing director of sales David Griffin said: 'These new cranes are fitted with the latest energy saving Liebherr Liduro drives, power management systems and safety features available in today's STS crane markets.
'The cranes will have an outreach of 45 metres, a back reach of 15 metres and a lift height over rail of 32 metres, ensuring that they will have the lift and reach capacity to cater for the largest container vessels which will visit Cork in the coming decades.'
