AUSTRALIA is set to command a maritime mission to safeguard Red Sea trade routes from Houthi rebel attacks, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The mission, Operation Prosperity Guardian, will see Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel already stationed in the Middle East assume control of Combined Task Force 153 in October, following Italy's handover.
Despite this leadership role, the opposition has criticized Australia for not deploying a warship to support the mission, arguing that it falls short of the country's obligations to the United States.
The new command underscores Australia's commitment to international maritime security in a critical region.
