The Ontario International Airport (ONT) posted 18 per cent growth in cargo volumes year on year in 2020, while passengers through ONT was down more than 50 per cent, reports London's Air Cargo News.
ONT processed 900,000 tons of commercial freight, while mail shipments increase 17 per cent to more than 25,000 tons.
'Ontario solidified its position as a leading air cargo hub in 2020. Working closely with our freight partners, we not only withstood the surge in e-commerce shipments early in the year, we ramped up quickly to manage double-digit increases in commercial freight volume as Californians hunkered down at home and shopped online for vital household supplies,' said ONT executive officer Mark Thorpe.
Some 2.5 million travellers moved through ONT last year, with domestic passengers totalling more than 2.4 million. International travellers exceed 95,000, with a decrease of 68 per cent compared to the previous year.
Regardless, ONT still fared significantly better than most airports in California and across the world. Air passenger volumes globally fell at least 60 per cent in 2020 as a result of the pandemic.
