JAPANESE shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) is donating JPY3 million (US$22,000) to the Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia) to help the victims and towns to recover from the earthquake that struck Indonesia's West Java area on November 21 that killed 106 people.
'The nyk Group would like to offer its sincerest condolences to all those who have been displaced or have lost friends or family members as a result of the earthquake,' NYK said in a statement.
The Japanese shipping carrier added: 'NYK has established a deep relationship with Indonesia through energy transportation, vehicle transportation, logistics, and terminal and harbour transport businesses that have been developed in Indonesia since 1983, when the company began transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Indonesia to Japan.
'NYK has also aimed to contribute to Indonesia by training higher quality seafarers and creating employment opportunities, and in 2021, the first Indonesian captain and chief engineer of an NYK LNG carrier were appointed.'
