THE Port of new Orleans (NOLA) has recorded 30 per cent fewer vessels during August, but saw a 178 per cent increase in breakbulk cargo, reports New York's FreightWaves.
Port NOLA handled 159,518 tons of breakbulk cargo and 42,589 TEU in August, a 0.3 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
'Most of what is driving it is not getting the full import supply of empty equipment to be able to feed the exports,' said Port NOLA's vice president Todd Rives.
The port handled 9,742 Class I railcar switches in August, a 3.6 per cent decrease year-over-year.
Said New Orleans Public Belt Railroad general manager Mike Stolzman: 'On the rail side, we actually saw a reduction in total numbers, which is a direct result of Hurricane Ida, where we lost four full days of revenue at the end of August,'
'We would have had a very good month in August had we not lost those four days. We saw a significant improvement in our local customer switching, and we were on our way to a very good month on our Class I switching,' said Mr Stolzman.
