NORWEGIAN salmon exports to the Far East are expected to receive a significant lift next month following the launch of a new air route between Oslo and Hong Kong.
The air freight carrier, Hong Kong Air Cargo, is behind the service and believes seafood in particular can look forward to a more efficient route into Asia, reports Edinburgh, Scotland's Fish Farmer.
Around 7,000 tonnes of Norwegian salmon have been exported through Hong Kong so far this year with the region one of the fastest growing seafood markets once again.
Hong Kong Air Cargo, which is purely a cargo transporter operating scheduled and charter services, is initially planning a weekly flight from Oslo. The new service starts on September 4.
Eva Beate Lande, freight manager at Avinor, which runs most of Norway's commercial airports, said: 'We are very happy to welcome Hong Kong Air Cargo to Oslo Airport.
'This route gives Norwegian exporters, especially in fisheries, a fast and reliable transport route to Asia, which strengthens our competitiveness in the global market.
'The new connection to one of the world's largest economic hubs gives Norwegian exporters access to new markets. This will contribute to increased trade and strengthening of economic ties between Norway and Asia.'
