Mundra among very few Indian ports able to dock 14,000-TEU vessels
MUNDRA International Container Terminal (MICT) has berthed the largest containership, the 14,036-TEU MSC Valeria, with a berth with 17.5 metres alongside.
Mundra Port in Gujarat captures cargo flows from the regions of north and northwest India. Its advantage lies in its lack of tidal restrictions, berth depth which allows for the mega vessels and advantaged port technology.
The average capacity of a containership calling at India ports is less than 4,000-TEU, which puts Mundra among 35 ports in the world able to handle a mega vessel of 14,000 TEU with a length over 365 metres, said a statement from Adani Ports.
"Considering the current global economic scenario, especially in the shipping and logistics sector, delivering cost efficient services to customers will be the single most important factor to the trade," said Adani Port and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) chairman Gautam Adani, in a report from Livemint, India's Wall Street Journal affiliate.
