GENEVA headquartered Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), now rated the world's biggest, has announced that from July 8, it will be implementing new hazardous cargo surcharges for low risk, medium risk and high risk commodities.
For low risk the surcharge will be US$250 per TEU; for medium risk it will be $500 per TEU; for high risk, $800 per TEU; and for very high risk it will require Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE ) approval.
The actual risk identifiers are based on the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Packing Group. When the packing group is not mentioned, additional approval/confirmation will be required as well as rating ad hoc based on commodity.
Ultra High IMDG Class 1, 2, 5.2, 7 (explosives, gases, peroxides, radioactive materials) (all these classes are accepted but exceptional, subject to HSSE approval / owners' decision).
The same Risk Identifiers from point 1 and 2, will apply as well for point 2 but for the Basel Convention Cargo or Waste Shipments.
msc does not accept IMDG Class 6.2 (infectious substances). The above will be applicable for all shipments from US ports and Puerto Rico to the Red Sea (Yemen, Jordan, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt (Sokhna), Sudan); Middle East (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Iran); Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives).
