FLIGHT checks on Hong Kong International's new third runway began last weekend with operations expected to start later this year, reports London's Air Cargo News.
The airport authority said that the flight check started on March 26 in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Department and the Flight Inspection Centre of Civil Aviation Administration of China.
The flight check is expected to be completed in April, with a view to ensuring that related air navigation service equipment, flight procedures and the airfield ground lighting system fully meet the standards of International Civil Aviation Organisation.
'The pavement works of the third runway have been completed,' the airport authority said. 'Related infrastructure facilities including taxiways, airfield ground lighting system, and rescue and firefighting facilities, among others, have been substantially completed.
'The third runway is scheduled to commence operation this year as planned.'
After its expansion, the airport, which is the world's largest international cargo hub, will be able to handle cargo volumes of around 10 million tonnes.
Last year, the airport saw its cargo volumes increase by 12.5 per cent year on year to 5 million tonnes, exceeding the 4.8 million tonnes recorded in 2019. The number of cargo flights surged to an all-time record of 82,935, a year-on-year increase of 19.8 per cent.
