PORT of Melbourne's total container throughput in June this year was up 2.3 per cent against the same month last year, according to the latest monthly trade statistics from the port, reports Australia's Daily Cargo News.
The port handled 264,000 TEU last month, with full imports and full exports (excluding Bass Strait) up 7.8 per cent and 15.2 per cent against the prior year, respectively.
Imports of furniture, domestic appliances and timber in June were all above last year's volumes, while exports of timber, hay, chaff and fodder, barley and meats also increased.
Total empty container movements were down 3.3 per cent in June 2024 against the same month last year.
Full Bass Strait volumes decreased 5.3 per cent in June 2024, and full transshipments decreased 32.1 per cent.
Port of Melbourne's non-container trade increased 4.6 per cent last month compared with June 2024, largely driven by the liquid bulk trade which shot up 25.9 per cent.
The dry bulk trade in June increased 8.2 per cent compared with the same month last year, however the breakbulk trade fell 39.4 per cent.
