MAERSK has unveiled an innovative service, introducing a roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) operation that transports containers weekly from Tunisia, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
The new service, launched in mid-November, serves as an expedited alternative to the company's feeder service from Tangier, catering to the efficiency preferences of shippers.
In collaboration with Italy's Groupo Grendi, which already provides logistics services to Tunisia and manages operations at the port of Cagliari on the island of Sardinia, maersk aims to position Cagliari as a strategic logistics hub.
This move is designed to enhance operational management in the dynamic and growing market of North Africa, providing a faster and more streamlined solution for businesses in the region, as stated by Grendi.
'Our new offering is reducing the transit times to and from Tunisia while adding reliability and efficiency to the supply chains,' said Maersk sales Ruben Moratinos.
Maersk has reached out to secure the ro-ro vessel, Wedellsborg, to sustain its weekly service linking the Port of Rades in Tunisia with Cagliari.
Constructed in 2014, this 11,630-dwt vessel is owned by the Danish company Weco. Previously, the Wedellsborg was a part of the Nordana operation, acquired by Weco from DFDS in 1984.
Afterward, it was deployed on a transatlantic ro-ro service before the closure of Nordana in 2017.
