THE Kenya Ports Authority's (KPA) vessel-calling report shows that Denmark's Maersk Line topped the list with a 35 per cent share of container volume in Mombasa, overtaking its closest competitor, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), by a margin of 19.9 per cent.
Maersk brought 185 ships to the port trading a total of 457,685 TEU for both imports and exports, according to the report.
Within this total 212,732 TEU were fully imports, 17,503 TEU were empty imports, 88,235 TEU were fully exports, and 139,215 TEU were empty exports, reported Nairobi's Business Daily.
Mediterranean Shipping Company had 131 vessels call at the port of Mombasa, trading a total of 198,451 TEU for both imports and exports, hence controlling a 15.2 per cent share of container throughput.
Within this total, 104,305 TEU were fully imports, 1,610 TEU were empty imports, 37,194 TEU were fully exports and 55,342 TEU were empty exports.
Evergreen Line brought to the port of Mombasa 30 vessels that traded a total of 157,371 TEU in imports and exports, thereby controlling a 12.1 per cent volume share. Evergreen ships carried 79,486 TEU of full imports, 104 TEU of empty imports, 16,745 TEU of full exports and 61,036 TEU of empty exports.
Rais Shipping Services brought to the port 42 vessels to trade a total of 147,197 TEU in both imports and exports, representing a 11.3 per cent of the share of container throughput. The ships carried 74,846 TEU of full imports, 167 TEU of empty imports, 12,525 TEU of full exports and 59,659 TEU of empty exports.
Pacific International Line (PIL) - despite having 74 vessels calling at the port compared to Rais's 42 and Evergreen's 30 - remained No 4 with a 10.7 per cent market share.
PIL vessels traded a total 139,543 TEU both in imports and exports through the port. The ships carried 63,425 TEU of full imports, 4,198 TEU of empty imports, 13,938 TEU of full exports and 57,982 TEU of empty exports.
CMA CGM had 59 of its ships call at the port to trade a total of 98,398 TEU, translating into a 7.5 per cent share. The CMA CGM vessels carried 50,616 TEU of full imports and 2,626 TEU of empty imports, 11,462 TEU of full exports and 33,694 TEU of empty exports.
Messina Line with 35 ships that called at the port traded a total of 39,317 TEU in both imports and exports, a figure that represented a three per cent share of container volumes.
The Messina vessels carried 19,475 TEU of full imports and 1,646 TEU of empty imports, 6,332 TEU of full exports and 11,864 TEU of empty exports.
Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) with 14 ships calling at the port traded a total of 23,238 TEU in imports and exports. The vessels carried 12,159 TEU of full imports, 1,684 TEU of full exports and 9,395 TEU of empty exports. According to the report, that represented a 1.8 per cent share of TEU.
DSS Shipping had 35 vessels that called at the port that traded a total of 33,505 TEU in both imports and exports. The figure represented 2.6 per cent share of container throughput. The ships brought 18,984 TEU of full imports, 354 TEU of empty imports, 2,263 TEU of full exports and 11,904 TEU of empty exports.
Seven Sea Agency brought to the port six vessels that carried 1,600 TEU of full imports, 23 TEU of full exports and 1,739 TEU of empty exports, representing a 0.3 per cent share of container volume.
Other shipping lines combined brought 89 vessels to dock at the port for a total of 5,795 TEU in both imports and exports, which represented a 0.4 per cent share of container volume. The other vessels accounted for 2,392 TEU of full imports, 522 TEU of empty imports, 1,708 TEU of full exports and 1,173 TEU of empty exports.
According to the KPA report, a total of 700 ships called at the port of Mombasa, trading a total of 1.3 million TEU.
'Of the 1.3 million TEU, 640,020 were fully imports, 28,730 were empty imports, while 192,109 were fully exports and 443,003 were empty exports,' said KPA's head of corporate communication Bernard Osoro.
