M/V CHENG MAY, giant bulk carrier went out of control in the Strait of Istanbul
The 295-meter-long giant bulk carrier CHENG MAY, accompanied by a pilot, had a machine failure right after entering the Bosphorus from the South.

On Saturday, February 12, 2022, the Bosphorus was once again exposed to ship-borne danger. This time, although its cargo was not dangerous, its oil lamp was large: The 295-meter-long giant bulk carrier CHENG MAY, accompanied by a pilot, had a machine failure right after entering the Bosphorus from the South. The following statements were made in the statement made by the General Directorate of Coastal Safety immediately after the incident;
“While the Liberian-flagged cargo ship CHENG MAY, with a length of 295 meters, was under the escort of our tugboat 'KURTARMA-6' from Colombia to Zonguldak Port, a machine malfunctioned at the entrance of the Bosphorus. The tugboats KURTARMA-1, KURTARMA 5, KURTARMA-11 and our KEGM-3 fast rescue boat were immediately dispatched to the region. The Bosphorus was closed to ship traffic”.

In the statement made by the Governorship of Istanbul on the subject, the following statements were included;
“The Liberian-flagged, 295 m long bulk carrier named CHENG MAY, sailing from Colombia to Zonguldak Port, malfunctioned at around 16.45 at the entrance of the Bosphorus. Rescue Tugboats of the General Directorate of Coastal Safety and the Coast Guard and Marmara Straits Regional Command teams were immediately dispatched to the region. The Bosphorus has been temporarily closed to maritime traffic due to the failure of ships loaded with approximately 170,000 tons of coal.
ANCHORED AT AHIRKAPI
Rescue boats were activated for the Liberian-flagged cargo ship CHENG MAY, which had a machine malfunction at the entrance of the Bosphorus, and the Bosphorus was closed to ship traffic. The ship, which was learned to be loaded with approximately 170,000 tons of coal, was safely anchored in Ahırkapı, accompanied by the KURTARMA-1-5-10-11 Tugboats and the KEGM-3 boat under the coordination of the Istanbul Ship Traffic Services Center.
As of 21.40, the Bosphorus was opened to ship traffic in the south-north direction.
