LUFTHANSA (LHA) bookings are back, with CEO Carsten Spohr declaring he doesn't believe the aviation industry's staffing problems will be solved in time for an expected busy summer, reports Aerotime Hub, of Vilnius, Lithuania.
'The upcoming summer will be a major operational challenge for the whole industry,' said Mr Spohr.
Like rival Air France-KLM, LHA saw travel demand increase significantly in the first quarter of 2022 and expects a record summer for leisure travel.
In the first quarter, lufthansa doubled its revenue to US$5.7 billion and narrowed its adjusted loss before interest and tax (EBIT) to $626 million.
Air France-KLM declares recovery is here, after posting a better profit for the first quarter of 2022.
'Last week, total bookings exceeded 2019 levels for the first time,' said Mr Spohr. 'Customers are increasingly confident that the crisis is over.'
However, while demand is returning strongly, the aviation industry is struggling to rebuild quickly enough after the Covid crisis left it grounded for two years.
Airlines have been forced to cancel flights due to staffing shortages, with the future uncertain.
