LOS ANGELES residents are raising hell about a proposed container storage yard not far from the harbour police station in San Pedro, bordering Wilmington district, reports the Long Beach Daily Breeze
'The burden of the supply chain and port expansion should not rest on the back of the community,' said Wilmington Neighborhood Council chairwoman Gina Martinez.
Ms Martinez declared Wilmington is overburdened and surrounded by port projects as it is. The proposed container yard is making its way through harbour department approvals.
Ms Martinez listed many concerns that could impact the community, including hazardous wastes reported and how the lighting, noise, traffic and stacking of containers up to six high will affect neighbours.
'This is the only way from Wilmington to the police station,' said Ms Martinez.
'Wilmington has no hospital and utilises Providence in San Pedro for emergency services. This is one of the quickest ways to get from Wilmington to San Pedro for emergency services.'
The community's response to adding another container yard in Wilmington is no more according to Ms Martinez.
The Gibson Boulevard project would create a paved, striped and fenced area with an estimated 393-stall container parking lot.
It would be used for loading, unloading and parking shipping containers, and include an extensive planted landscape area.
