KALMAR, part of Cargotec, has been awarded a contract to heighten four ZPMC ship-to-shore (STS) cranes by nine metres at the French port of Le Havre, starting from the third quarter. Generale de Manutention Portuaire (GMP), a joint venture between DP World and Terminal Link (CMA CGM), operates the cranes.
The Terminal de France is a state-of-the-art facility operated by GMP that is in the midst of expanding its capabilities and capacity to be able to handle the new mega containerships operated by CMA CGM.
Kalmar will be responsible for the planning, engineering and execution of the entire project that involves heightening the cranes by inserting leg extensions underneath the portal beams. During the upgrade the cranes will be jacked up using specialised jacking towers and hydraulic jacks.
GMP technical director Guy Sansone said: 'Extending the capabilities of our STS cranes through heightening will ensure we can continue to provide our customers with the best possible level of service regardless of how large their vessels are.'
Said Kalmar vice president Eduardo Prat: 'We are delighted to be able to support DP World and CMA CGM in future-proofing their operations at Terminal de France ready for handling the next generation of mega-size vessels.'
