A FEDERAL judge has approved a motion allowing Miami student Matthew Bergwall to travel to Connecticut while transitioning between housing leases, reports Connecticut's daily Register Citizen.
Bergwall, 22, is currently out on bail and awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to mail fraud conspiracy in a packaging scheme as part of a plea deal earlier this month.
Federal sentencing guidelines suggest Bergwall could face several years in prison, with the charge carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years.
However, under the plea agreement, his offense level would likely result in a sentence ranging from 63 to 78 months, with potential adjustments that could further reduce his sentence.
The case, which gained attention after Intelligencer published a profile calling Bergwall 'the Package King of Miami,' highlighted his lavish lifestyle before his arrest last fall.
US magistrate Judge Christopher Tuite granted a motion from Bergwall's attorneys, allowing him to travel between Florida and Connecticut.
The request was made so that Bergwall could spend time with his family in Darien during the gap between the end of his current lease and the start of a new one later this month.
