HAMBURG-based Hapag-Lloyd, the world's sixth largest carrier, recently announced it has stopped accepting cargo bookings to Riyadh via the Port of Dammam, Saudi Arabia due to serious delays.
"Riyadh-bound containers are experiencing prolonged delays due to the ongoing terminal congestion in Dammam Port. We shall resume bookings once the situation improves," said a statement from the carrier.
Starting July 20, the carrier will levy "operational recovery charges" of US$85 per TEU and $125 per FEU on all import and export shipments handled at the ports of Jeddah and Dammam.
As the nearest port to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's capital and largest city, Dammam has been overloaded due to drastic increase in container volumes in and out of this region.
Dammam handled 417,000 TEU in the first quarter of the year, up 26.7 per cent from 329,000 TEU handled in the same period last year.
