GEMADEPT and CMA CGM's joint venture Gemalink began operations with the 13,800-TEU CMA CGM Corte Real on January 19 in Cai Mep, Vietnam, reports Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News.
The port covers 72 hectares downstream of the Cai Mep River in Phu. Previously on December 30 and January 7, the port received two pilot ships from CMA CGM.
It's the biggest deep sea container port in Cai Mep as the eventual completion of the US$330 million project will have a capacity of 2.4 million TEU. The present port capacity has 1.5 million TEU.
The port declared its competitive advantage thanks to its location at the river mouth with the deepest draught for a turning basin, and the longest central feeder berth to connect Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta region.
Gemadept vice director Nguyen Thanh Binh declared the sound relationship with its partners will keep the port busy at maximum capacity right from the first years of operation.
