THE fire aboard the 4,253-TEU Zim Kingston at anchor off Vancouver Island, has been extinguished say the Israeli owners, Zim Integrated Shipping Services, reports Bloomberg.
After having lost some 40 containers overboard during a storm, 16 were rescued from the Maltese-flagged ship, said the Canadian Coast Guard.
The fire was been put out and firefighting tugboats stood by to prevent renewed flareups, with firefighters due to board as soon as weather conditions allow, said Zim.
Zim added in the statement that it ??is working closely with all relevant agencies to secure the crew safety and minimise environmental impact.?? The Israeli shipping firm said it??s providing all information needed to assess any potential environmental effects, safety of navigation or other concerns.
