FEDEX Express has collaborated with Wing Aviation to execute the US's first commercial drone delivery, marking the launch of a drone trial operating in the US, following Wing Aviation's authorisation from the Federal Aviation Administration (F) to deliver commercial packages to residences.
The project is part of the US Department of Transportation's unmanned aircraft systems Integration Pilot Programme (IPP).
The purpose of the trial is to demonstrate the benefits of deploying drones as a last-mile delivery service. During the trial, Wing Aviation drones will transport FedEx packages to qualifying homes in Christiansburg, Virginia, reported London's Air Cargo News.
The pilot also allows participants to order Walgreens health and wellness products through Wing Aviation's delivery app.
FedEx Express chief executive Don Colleran was quoted as saying: 'We hope that this latest addition to our delivery options will enhance the last-mile service for urgent, same-day deliveries for customers in rural or semi-rural areas, or with other exceptional delivery needs.'
