EU forwarders and road freight operators are cautioning customers to anticipate a substantial surge in costs as a new European toll system, linked to CO2 emissions, is introduced, commencing in Germany on December 1, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
In adherence to an eu directive, heavy goods vehicles will be classified into five categories based on their CO2 emissions, serving as the basis for toll rate determination.
Austria is set to implement this system in January, with the rest of the EU expected to follow suit by March 2025 at the latest.
DKV Mobility, a toll payment solutions provider, has estimated that forwarders could face a surcharge of US$218 per ton of CO2 on all commercial vehicles weighing over 7.5 tons.
This could potentially lead to an 83 per cent increase in toll costs for the trucking industry in Germany.
'The increases are of a magnitude sufficient to make current operating models unsustainable for many operators, so the expectation is that they will try to pass on the cost to shippers, raising rates for freight within and transiting through affected countries,' said UK's Transport Intelligence (Ti) head Michael Clover.
Said Dachser: 'The toll is a fixed government tax over which Dachser, as a logistics service provider, has no influence.'
