THE UN's International Maritime Organisation's next quest may well be to regulate underwater noise generated by ships, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
Paving the way to new fines and penalties is the IMO's Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC 10), which has been meeting with the Clean Arctic Alliance, which calls for costly measures to silence ships so not to disturb the wildlife.
'Underwater noise levels from shipping are increasing in Arctic waters, threatening both indigenous communities and wildlife yet there is no regulation of this noise pollution,' said Clean Arctic Alliance lead advisor Sian Prior.
'Up to now, the IMO has spent too long focusing on voluntary guidelines instead of moving to mandatory noise reduction measures,' she said.
