ECO-LOBBY Clean Shipping Coalition (CSC) has voiced its disappointment at the lack of progress and 'low ambition' .at the IMO to reduce emissions from shipping, reports London's Vessel Performance Optimisation (VPO).
'Two years after agreeing its initial greenhouse gas strategy, a meeting of the UN maritime agency, the IMO, did little more than review options already on the table and gave far too much time to technical measures that will deliver too little too late.' said the Brussels-based CSC statement.
Said Seas at Risk spokesman John Maggs: 'The importance of speed reduction in cutting ship green house gas emissions in the short-term is woven into the fabric of many of the proposed measures.'
Japan and Norway's proposed measure to certify ships that limit their engine power - though the limit can easily be reversed - is unambitious, opaque, and susceptible to cheating, said the CSC, whose institutional members consist of eight related eco-lobbies, he said.
Said Faig Abbasov, spokesman for CSC member Transport & Environment: 'The IMO spent yet another week talking the talk without deciding anything except to kick the can down the road.'
Said Dan Hubbell, spokesman for CSC member Ocean Conservancy: 'The IMO must aim for full decarbonisation of shipping by 2050 at the latest.'
