DIANA Containerships, a global shipowners, has signed, through two separate wholly-owned subsidiaries, two memoranda of agreement to purchase from an unaffiliated third party two postpanamax containerships, the Rotterdam and the Hamburg.
The 2008-built, 6,500-TEU Rotterdam went for US$37.5 million and is expected to be delivered mid-September.
The same-size Hamburg, built in 2009 went for $38.5 million, and is to be delivered by the end of November, under charter to MSC at a gross charter rate of $14,000 per day minus 3.75 per cent commission paid to third parties, said a company release distributed by Globe Newswire.
Based on the existing time charter party, the charterer has the option to redeliver the vessel at any time between January 2016 and March 2016.
Including these vessels, Diana's fleet will consist of 14 container vessels (six post-Panamax and eight Panamax) as well as a Panamax container vessel, the Cap Domingo, presumed sold to be delivered to its new owners by mid-March 2016.
