DHL Express plans to invest US$100 million in the expansion of its facility located at Hamilton International Airport in Ontario that will quadruple the size of its current sorting facility to 200,000 square feet and will add automatic sorting technology capable of processing 15,000 packages per hour

DHL Express plans to invest US$100 million in the expansion of its facility located at Hamilton International Airport in Ontario that will quadruple the size of its current sorting facility to 200,000 square feet and will add automatic sorting technology capable of processing 15,000 packages per hour. The German logistics giant opened its Hamilton hub in 2008 and now employs 225 people within a 50,000-square foot facility, reported the Niagara Falls Review.

CEO Andrew Williams of the company's Canadian branch said that the expansion makes sense given Hamilton airport's potential to 'become the cargo hub of Ontario'.

Hamilton economic development director Glen Norton said it was a 'pretty big deal for Hamilton,' pointing to construction jobs, new taxes and the city's share of improved revenue at the privately-operated, municipally-owned airport.

'Things will be happening very quickly because DHL wants to be up-and-running by next year's Christmas rush.'

The sorting facility is expected to handle mainly small packages and letter mail, with international packages being moved quickly between countries. At present, the existing facility sees two daily planes arrive with packages from an international hub in Cincinnati.

Hamilton International Airport is already Canada's largest overnight cargo airport, handling 525,161 kilogrammes of freight in 2018, up from 438,924 kilogrammes in 2016.
