DESCARTES Systems Group, the global leader in uniting logistics-intensive businesses in commerce, has unveiled its March Global Shipping Report for logistics and supply chain professionals, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
In February, US container import volumes experienced a six per cent decline from January, yet surged 23.3 per cent compared to the same period last year. It's worth noting that the shorter duration of February typically leads to smaller month-to-month fluctuations.
However, the year-on-year figures, although indicating exceptional growth, do not fully consider the impact of the Chinese Lunar New Year on February 2023 results.
Descartes' analysis suggests a more accurate growth estimate of 13 per cent.
February saw a reversal of the robust growth in imports from China witnessed in January 2024, particularly impacting West Coast ports, notably the Port of Long Beach.
The decrease in import volumes contributed to alleviating port transit delays, as factors such as the Panama drought and the Middle East conflict diminished the effect on the top East and Gulf Coast ports.
Descartes' latest logistics metrics update reveals that 2024 is off to a robust start for US container imports.
However, ongoing conditions at the Panama and Suez Canal, along with forthcoming labour negotiations at US South Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports, may affect global supply chain performance throughout the year.
'February 2024 was a strong month considering its brevity and continues the robust performance that started in January 2024,' said descartes vice president Chris Jones.
'The combined effect of the Panama drought and the conflict in the Middle East on transit times declined in February and volume for the Gulf Coast ports remained constant versus January.'
