UNITED Airlines has confirmed that delays in aircraft deliveries from Boeing are resulting in reduced block hours, leading to surplus staffing, reports Aviation Week.
Consequently, the airline is introducing voluntary programmes for pilots during the month of May to address this surplus staffing.
Initially, United had anticipated receiving 191 aircraft in 2024; however, this figure has now decreased to 88.
The adjustments made by United are a consequence of the January 737-9 groundings and the associated uncertainty regarding the certification of the 737-10 variant.
This variant has been excluded from United's internal plans, though the order itself has not been cancelled.
The airline's contractual commitments for aircraft deliveries in 2024 comprise eight 787s, 157 MAX family aircraft (comprising 43 737-8s, 34 737-9s, and 80 737-10s) and 26 A321neos.
By the end of 2022, United had projected 127 deliveries in 2024, including eight 787s, 88 MAXs, and 31 Airbus A321neos. However, the expected deliveries for 2024 now include seven 787s, 56 MAXs (consisting of 37 -8s and 19 -9s), and 25 A321neos.
For 2025, the projection stands at 64 deliveries compared to 135 contractual deliveries, with the removal of 71 -10s.
United, headquartered in Chicago, had previously announced a slowdown in pilot hiring for 2024 due to continued new aircraft certification and manufacturing delays at Boeing.
At the time of announcing these adjustments, United indicated a pause in new hire classes for May and June, with plans to resume these classes in July.
