IRIDIUM Communications, a prominent provider of global satellite communications for voice and data, has disclosed that cosco Shipping (CSSC) is in the process of installing Iridium Global @FAXTEXT = Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) terminals across its fleet, reports London's Port Technology.
As per Iridium Communications, the deployment of the Lars Thrane LT-3100S terminal on the Cosco Tengfei underscores CSSC's dedication to prioritizing the safety of its crew, vessels, and cargo.
The Cosco Tengfei, a state-of-the-art Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) capable of transporting up to 5,000 vehicles, operates worldwide, facilitating the shipment of vehicles from Chinese manufacturers to various destinations globally.
With Iridium GMDSS now supporting the mission of the Cosco Tengfei through its global coverage, distress alert capabilities, safety voice communication, and provision of maritime safety information, it offers a cost-effective solution for implementation and operation.
These features, coupled with the Long-Range Identification Tracking (LRIT) and Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) support integrated into the LT-3100S, extend to polar regions where CSSC's existing GMDSS coverage was previously inadequate.
'I am glad to witness the moment of the first Iridium GMDSS system deployment on a CSSC vessel, the Cosco Tengfei. Iridium GMDSS will greatly enhance her safety service capabilities while sailing on the ocean,' said CSSC director Xiaofeng Guo.
'It also serves as a good demonstration that the CSSC Fleet can operate in the Arctic Ocean region. We expect to deploy more Iridium GMDSS systems on those Arctic-route vessels during 2024.'
