IN April, the Port of colombo experienced a slowdown in transshipment volume growth to single digits, following four months of double-digit growth driven by disruptions in the Red Sea due to Yemen's Houthi rebels, reports Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror.
The port's transshipment volumes grew 8.1 per cent year on year (YoY) to 525,936 TEU, marking the lowest growth rate since November of the previous year.
Overall container throughput at the Port of Colombo increased by 10.2 per cent YoY to 626,926 TEU, driven by rising imports.
Import container (laden) volumes rose 22.7 per cent YoY to 36,457 TEU, while export container (laden) volumes increased 6.6 per cent YoY to 21,816 TEU.
Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT), the port's only fully operational deep container terminal, handled 268,513 TEU, up 7.8 per cent from the previous year.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority manages the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) and the partially operational East Container Terminal (ECT), which handled a combined total of 184,286 TEU in April, achieving a three per cent YoY growth.
South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT) saw its container volumes rise 23.5 per cent YoY to 174,130 TEU in April.
This included 276 container cargo ships, five conventional ships, and 16 others.
