FRENCH shipping giant cma CGM is launching a programme that will allow US customers to earn carbon credits for returning containers early, reports Ventura, California's gCaptain.
CMA CGM declared that the new programme, 'TEU for Trees,' will allow shippers to offset their carbon footprint and improve supply chain efficiency by boosting equipment availability.
Under the scheme, importers will get 2.5 tons of carbon credits for containers returned during calendar days one through four.
CMA CGM declared it will use EDI transaction data to calculate the credit instead of requiring customer invoices or documentation.
Each customer will get a progress report every 30 days and be issued an official carbon offset certificate for total credits earned at the end.
'Encouraging customers to return boxes sooner provides additional containers and chassis for export bookings, and the type of incentive we are offering will result in the formation of new socio-environmental projects right here in the United States,' said CMA CGM.
'It is our hope that through this programme, others in the industry will be inspired to leverage their capabilities to positively impact the environment and our local communities.'
The scheme will be effective from October 1 to December 30 this year.
