OVER the next two decades, it is projected that a total of 3,590 freighter aircraft will enter the market, with 1,060 being newly built (constituting 30 per cent) and 2,530 converted from passenger aircraft (comprising 70 per cent), reports Mumbai's Stat Trade Times.
The latest update from London's cirium Ascend Consultancy indicates that freight capacity, measured in available tonne kilometres (ATKs), is expected to grow at an annual rate of 4.1 per cent in 2022.
These figures align with the patterns observed in the last two forecasts, reflecting the ongoing surge in conversions attributed to dynamics in the air cargo market driven by the Covid crisis.
These dynamics include the growth of e-commerce and the availability of feedstock.
Additionally, freight tonne kilometres (FTKs) traffic is anticipated to increase by four per cent.
'New widebody factory freighters from Airbus and Boeing are due to enter service in 2026 and 2027, respectively,' said the update.
'Meanwhile, conversion demand, driven by the ongoing rise of e-commerce along with increasing volumes of feedstock in the wake of the Covid crisis, has seen modification numbers peak in 2023. Focus is now on conversion of the newer generation aircraft including the A321ceo, 737-800, A330ceo, and 777-300ER.'
