CHINA's Trina Solar has signed a memorandum of understanding to build a large-scale photovoltaic manufacturing base in the United Arab Emirates, reports Caixin.
The solar panel giant's deal is with the Gulf states port and economic zone operator, AD Ports Co. Trina Solar will build the plant in the Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi, known as KEZAD, which is operated by AD Ports.
The planned capacity includes 50,000 tons of high-purity polysilicon, 30 gigawatts of crystalline silicon wafers and five gigawatts of photovoltaic (PV) modules, to be built in three phases.
Trina Solar will dispatch a team to the UAE to conduct field research on the planned project and make feasibility studies and business investment plans. The accord is valid for three years, and either party may terminate it by giving 30 days' written notice, the company said.
The UAE aims to reach net zero emission by 2050. To do so, the country plans to invest up to AED200 billion (US$54.5 billion) in renewable energy to triple its contribution in the next seven years.
