The shipyard in Yangzhou witnessed the naming and delivery of two groundbreaking new buildings, N997 and N998, reports Rotterdam's Offshore Energy.
These vessels, designated as Cosco Shipping Green Water 01 and Cosco Shipping Water 02, respectively, mark a significant milestone as the first 700-TEU river-sea pure battery-powered containerships independently designed, developed, and constructed by Chinese companies.
The inaugural ship commenced its journey in July 2023, with the second 700 TEU unit being constructed two months earlier.
Boasting a 10,000 deadweight tonnage, these boxships are equipped to transport up to 700 TEU while relying solely on battery power throughout the entire voyage.
Their innovative design incorporates swappable battery technology housed in containers that can be exchanged when the power is depleted.
Each ship accommodates 24 batteries in a 20-foot container and can carry up to 36 units, resulting in a total battery capacity exceeding 50,000 kilowatt hours.
These vessels are expected to make a substantial environmental impact upon entering operation by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2,918 tons annually.
This reduction is equivalent to the yearly emissions of 2,035 cars or the environmental benefit of planting 160,000 trees yearly.
Each boxship has an intelligent ship system, including an intelligent integration platform, intelligent navigation, intelligent engine room, and intelligent monitoring of the ship's energy efficiency.
With dimensions of 119.8 metres in length and 23.6 metres in width, these vessels contribute to the establishment of an electrified network for shipping along China's Yangtze River.
This initiative aims to facilitate the green transformation of the waterway and showcase advancements in green and zero-carbon shipping.
The first vessel recently obtained certification as the first battery-powered river-sea direct ship from the china Classification Society and is set to commence operations in the Yangtze River, from Jiangsu to Shanghai, in the near future.
This project aligns with Cosco Shipping Group's broader commitment to achieving the shipping industry's green, low-carbon, and intelligent transformation, promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly development.
