CHINA'S tourism industry has experienced a significant boost this year after expanding visa waivers and simplifying entry procedures for foreign visitors, reports Caixin.
Data from the National Immigration Administration (NIA) shows that foreign trips to china have surged 129.9 per cent year on year, reaching 17.25 million.
Additionally, 846,000 visitors obtained visas on arrival, an 182.9 per cent increase compared to last year.
Although the NIA did not provide data for the same period in 2019, before the Covid crisis, Caixin's analysis suggests that this year's entries are still 40 per cent below 2019 levels.
NIA vice director Liu Haitao anticipates that the influx of foreign tourists could generate US$14 billion in spending.
Citing 2023 data from the National Bureau of Statistics, Mr Liu noted that foreign travellers spent an average of $485 per day during their visits to China.
