After water spout hit cruise ship, crew member who shared video was sacked by Costa
During a Mediterranean cruise of the "Costa Fascinosa" winds up to 90 knots hit the ship on Sep 22, 2014 between Venice and Bari.
At the time the vessel was heading towards the Greek Islands from its departure port of Venice.
The incident occurred near the Marche coast in the East of Italy.
At around 10:45 p.m. the waves caused one engine to fail which made the ship list heavily.
According to local Italian news outlets the 114,500 ton ship has been caught in a waterspout. A waterspout looks identical to a tornado but usually not as strong and are common in hot tropical regions. The waterspout that affected the Fascinosa seemed to have caused winds up to 90 mph along with strong waves for more than 2 hours.
All over the ship flew glasses, plates and utensils. Several passengers have fallen to the ground driven by the centrifugal force imposed by rotation.
The ship command immediately activated the relevant procedures and guests and relevant authorities have been immediately informed. Some passengers asked for medical help, the line said, but no serious injuries were reported Jimmy Hernandez, a Philippino crew member that shared the video of the carnage in the galleys has now lost his job as a result.
The video shows a mass of plates and glasses on the floors in the galleys, as well as the bars throughout the ship. Passengers were said to be in a state of panic, especially at the time when the captain allegedly said he had lost control of the ship.
The crew member in question was a Filipino pastry chef, and after he had posted the footage on Facebook other crew members shared his account, and it wasn’t long before photos appeared in Italian newspapers. Following the mass of media attention, Costa Cruises came out to downplay things, and shorty after sacked the employee.
He was flown back to his home in the Philippines, and at this time has no job.
