CANADIAN freight carrier WestJet Cargo has announced a long-term extension of its partnership with Jettainer, a Germany's ULD (Unit Load Device) management services provider, reports London's Air Cargo News.
The collaboration between the two companies began in 2015 and has now been extended for several more years.
The contract extension was disclosed during the air cargo Europe exhibition. Jettainer will continue to oversee the management and maintenance of WestJet's entire ULD fleet, including the provision of additional main-deck containers as WestJet expands its freighter services.
WestJet, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, currently operates a passenger plane fleet consisting of more than 100 Boeing aircrft.
However, the company is set to significantly expand its cargo operations this year with the introduction of four Boeing 737-800BCF (Boeing Converted Freighters) to its fleet.
Three of these freighters are already in service, with the fourth expected to join soon.
WestJet's foray into freighter operations marks an important milestone, as the company aims to rapidly expand its dedicated cargo services in addition to its existing bellyhold freight operations.
The increased freight capacity will benefit customers by providing new connections between Canada and the Caribbean, Europe, Japan and the United States.
The company also plans to offer specialised cargo services, including catering to the growing e-commerce sector and the shipment of perishable goods.
Jettainer's ULD management service for WestJet covers a fleet of over 1,000 containers and pallets used for transporting both baggage and freight.
The container fleet mainly consists of lightweight AKE units, which have now been supplemented with freighter-specific main-deck containers.
Jettainer is also able to supply additional equipment on short notice through its lease&fly service, which offers leasing options for standard or specialized ULDs as per the airline's requirements.
Jettainer constantly monitors ULD requirements, movements, and stock levels, adjusting the fleet composition as needed to ensure it can meet WestJet's demands at all times.
The company's advanced IT solution, JettWareNG, employs automation and AI-supported decision-making to enhance efficiency.
Intelligent data analytics help track lost ULDs, and the system can identify units stranded at off-airport locations for extended periods.
