The 'Stellar Samba' suffered a fire in its generator in the engine room on May 26, 2018, off the Brazilian coast. The fire was caused by leaked oil and could be extinguished by the crew. However, the ship was disabled, and the master informed the Brazilian Maritime Authorities, which sent a Navy ship to monitor the bulkcarrier's condition and provide safety cover. A tug was contracted and expected on scene on May 30. The crew was working on repairs of the generator, and it was possible that the tug's assistance would not be needed. On May 29 the vessel was underway at a speed of 4,2 knots in the South Atlantic. It had sailed in ballasti from Singapore and was bound to Itaqui, initial ETA May 27.
