CINCINNATI/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) serves as a major hub for Amazon Air and DHL Express, handling significant volumes of express shipments, reports New York's FreightWaves.
Now, the airport is strategically positioning itself to attract general cargo carried by passenger and freighter operators who seek faster turnarounds by bypassing congested international gateways.
Airport officials have taken steps to facilitate the processing of substantial cargo volumes, including a new passenger service by british Airways and a recent agreement with a private company to develop an air cargo warehouse facility with airside access on 4.5 acres of airport property.
British Airways is set to launch nonstop service between London Heathrow and CVG, operating five times a week using Boeing 787-800 Dreamliners.
During the winter season, the frequency will switch to four times weekly on Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The decision to establish this service was influenced by the proximity of Dayton's population to the Cincinnati area and the presence of millions of people within a two-hour drive of CVG.
Miami-based Alliance Ground International (AGI), a rapidly expanding airport services company backed by private equity, has been selected by British Airways to provide warehousing, pallet buildup/breakdown and sorting services.
AGI will operate in a 15,000-square-foot facility where cargo from British Airways flights will be offloaded and prepared for exports.
Delta Air Lines is currently the only other carrier offering transatlantic service from CVG, with flights to Paris. While the new British Airways route primarily focuses on passenger traffic, it also presents cargo opportunities.
