Box throughput at India's JNPT rises in October
CONTAINER throughput at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) totalled 368,000 TEU in October, of which JNPCT - the port-owned container terminal - handled 129,000 TEU, an increase of 10.58 per cent over the same month last year.
The number of containers handled by under JNPT's Direct Port Delivery (DPD) services surged by 34 per cent year on year in October, reported The Maritime Standard of Dubai.
The Indian Government is promoting the DPD concept at container terminals as a major step towards lowering transaction costs at ports. JNPT has relaxed the procedures for EXIM trade to clear more containers under DPD.
Another JNPT initiative, the Inter-Terminal Transfer (ITT) of tractor trailers, is also reported to have helped in reducing traffic on the port's roads by up to 10 per cent. Under the ITT, a total of 13,365 trucks completed 17,260 transactions last month.
