Black Sea box terminals handled 587,168 TEU in first quarter
THE Black Sea container terminals of Ukraine, Romania, Russia, Georgia and Bulgaria handled a total of 587,168 TEU in first quarter of the year, including empties but excluding transshipments.
But full container volume in the first quarter dropped 2.94 per cent to 425,953 TEU compared to the same period last year, according to the Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.
Full containers amounted to 72.54 per cent of the total box volume while empties accounted for 27.46 per cent. All posted gains except Georgia, which fell 36.75 per cent.
During the three-month period, imports accounted for 52.62 per cent of the full container volume, while 47.38 per cent of the full containers were exports.
Total export volume from the region increased by 9.12 per cent in the period compared to Q1 2015, but exports from Georgia fell by 33.64 per cent.
Based on volume handled, the rankings of the top five container terminals in the region changed in Q1 2016: DPW (Constanta, Romania) maintained its first place, APMT Poti (Georgia) moved from the second place to fourth, NLE (Novorossyisk, Russia) moved from fourth to the second place, HPC Ukraine (Odessa, Ukraine) moved from the fifth to the third position and NUTEP (Novorossiysk, Russia) moved from third to the fifth place.
The leading carrier in the region was Maersk, which overtook MSC, while Arkas overcame Zim and became the fourth largest carrier. The top five carriers of the region were: Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Arkas and Zim and they controlled 74.36 per cent of the market.
