THE US port of Baltimore experienced an 8.8 per cent year-on-year throughput decline in April with container volumes falling to 58,864 TEU after a record March.
The port's April performance also came in stark contrast to the strong double-digit throughput growth registered at the ports of Savannah, up 25.8 per cent; Charleston, up 11.3 per cent; and Houston's 46 per cent year-on-year increase.
Those ports rely more heavily on imports of retailers who sought alternatives to west coast port congestion, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce.
Data from the Maryland Port Administration showed that Baltimore's loaded containers decreased to 46,084 TEU against April 2014's 52,900 TEU.
In March, Baltimore handled 77,792 TEU, including 57,097 full containers and 20,695 empties.
