THE ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have held talks to find ways to beat congestion created by mega ships that deliver cargo in massive, unmanageable increments.
While much of the blame has been assigned to the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), the big residual problem is the mega ship, reports the UK's Port Technology.
Speaking at a Long Beach Chamber of Commerce luncheon, the Port of Long Beach supply chain manager Michael Christensen said that together with shipping alliances, mega ships were creating landside overspill.
After the US Federal Maritime Commission allowed the ports of Long Beach and LA to collaborate on a solution, one likely outcome could be the outsourcing to companies interested in creating a ‘pool of chassis" that would ensure containers can by moved from the terminal area at all times, he said.
Other strategies to ease port congestion could be to have a transparent supply chain in which big name companies get solid information on logistical speeds, Mr Christensen said.
