TO address the recent surge in aviation accidents in the country, THE Nigerian federal government has called for a meeting with the heads of pertinent agencies, including the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the National Airspace Management Agency, and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to deal with the rising number of aviation accidents, reports the Punch of Lagos.
The last straw was at a Boeing 737 passenger jet from Aerocontractors Airlines crash-landing at Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
While there were no injuries or fatalities, the NSIB confirmed the occurrence of a 'serious accident' around 10:47am upon the aircraft's arrival from Lagos, prompting the closure of the runway.
The HS 125 aircraft, registered as 5N-AMM and operated by Flint Aero, sustained substantial damage, though no casualties were reported. Consequently, the federal government ordered an investigation into the incident.
In another incident on November 3, 2023, an aircraft carrying the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and 12 other passengers skidded off the runway at Ibadan's Ladoke Akintola Airport.
On August 1, 2023, a Jabiru J430 light single-engine airplane with registration marks 5N-CCQ, operated by Air First Hospitality & Tours, crashed during a test flight with two persons on board in Oba Akran area of Ikeja, Lagos State, resulting in a fire.
Said Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo: 'I have called the heads of the agencies in charge of regulation to explain what you have done to ensure safety standards are met.'
Mr Keyamo said he had also instructed the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau to brief him to say what happened.
'We are still waiting for the report; so, we cannot guess what exactly happened.' he said.
