China's Ningyuan Diankun, the largest pure electric ship, gains certification, showcasing advanced technology and zero-emission capabilities.
The China Classification Society has certified the 'Ningyuan Diankun,' which is described as the world's largest pure electric intelligent seagoing vessel and China's first high-end ship of its kind, reports Bangalore's MarineInsight.
This 740 TEU open-top container ship measures 127.8 metres and is owned by Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd., with construction undertaken by Jiangxi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. It is specifically designed for short-sea and coastal transport, achieving a top speed of 11.5 knots.
The vessel operates entirely on electric power, utilizing 10 containerized battery units as its primary energy source. It supports high-voltage shore charging and rapid battery swapping, while a photovoltaic system contributes to onboard energy generation.
The CCS stated that these systems enable zero-emission operations, resulting in annual carbon dioxide reductions of approximately 1,462 tonnes compared to conventional ships of similar size.
The ship carries the CCS i-ship intelligent notation, which reflects its advanced automation and integration capabilities. Its platform facilitates real-time route optimization, situational awareness, and continuous equipment monitoring to enhance operational efficiency.
The China Classification Society provided technical support throughout the project, including design reviews and engineering discussions, ensuring compliance with safety and technical standards during construction. The society emphasized its commitment to promoting green and intelligent technologies in shipbuilding.
