The US halts five offshore wind projects due to national security concerns, affecting cargo shipments and raising radar interference issues.
The US Department of the Interior has suspended leases for five major offshore wind projects along the East Coast, citing national security concerns, as reported by London's S&P Global.
The affected projects include Vineyard Wind 1, Revolution Wind, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, Sunrise Wind, and Empire Wind 1, all of which were supported by leasing and tax credit provisions in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that this action addresses risks posed by adversary technologies and vulnerabilities associated with large-scale wind farms near population centers. He explained to Fox Business that these projects pose risks of radar interference and jamming.
The suspension is expected to impact project cargo shipments, with ports such as Virginia's Portsmouth Marine Terminal already experiencing increased demand for heavy-lift operations due to the curtailed Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project.
Former US President Donald Trump has consistently opposed wind energy, advocating instead for oil and gas pipelines. The Interior Department noted that turbine blades and reflective towers create radar clutter, obscuring legitimate targets and generating false ones.
A 2024 Department of Energy report indicated that while radar thresholds can be raised to reduce clutter, this could lead to actual targets being missed.
