UN reports two boats capsized off Myanmar with over 500 Rohingya refugees feared dead. Ongoing efforts to verify the incident are underway.

The United Nations has raised alarm following reports of two boats capsizing off the coast of Myanmar at the end of June, which were carrying Rohingya refugees. In a joint statement made on July 16, 2026, UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 500 individuals aboard the two vessels may have lost their lives.

Initial assessments indicate that contact was lost with one of the boats shortly after it set sail, while the other is believed to have sunk off the coast of Myanmar's Ayeyarwady region on July 8.

Refugee Tragedy Off the Coast of Myanmar: Concerns That More Than 500 Lives May Have Been Lost

BANGKOK | It has been reported that more than 500 individuals may have died as a result of the capsizing of two boats reportedly carrying Rohingya refugees off the coast of Myanmar. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that efforts are ongoing to verify the incident, but initial findings indicate a significant humanitarian disaster.

According to the joint statement from UN agencies, the boats set sail from Rakhine State in western Myanmar at the end of June. The majority of the passengers were Rohingya fleeing their homes due to conflict and oppression in Myanmar, as well as individuals departing from refugee camps in the Cox's Bazar region of Bangladesh.

The first boat was carrying approximately 250 people. Shortly after setting sail, all communication with the vessel was lost. The second boat, which was reported to be carrying around 280 passengers, is believed to have sunk off the coast of Myanmar's Ayeyarwady region on July 8. Authorities reported that the death toll from both incidents has not yet been officially confirmed, but there are strong indications that more than 500 individuals may have perished.

UNHCR and IOM highlighted that conducting these journeys during the monsoon season significantly increases the risks. During this period, strong winds and high waves in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea make navigation for small, wooden boats extremely dangerous.

Rohingya, who have been deprived of citizenship rights for many years and are struggling to survive under dire humanitarian conditions, embark on perilous sea journeys organized by human traffickers in hopes of reaching Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand for safety and a better life. However, due to overcrowded and unsuitable vessels, this route is considered one of the deadliest irregular migration pathways in the world.

UN agencies called for the strengthening of search and rescue operations in the region, the provision of assistance to individuals in distress at sea in accordance with international maritime law, and increased regional cooperation in combating human trafficking networks. The statement also emphasized that to achieve a lasting resolution to the Rohingya crisis, the conflicts in Myanmar must come to an end, and the conditions that lead to forced displacement must be eliminated.
