Turkey's fisheries production exceeds 1 million tons by 2025, driven by aquaculture and sustainable practices, marking a historic achievement.
Turkey has reached a historic milestone in its fisheries sector, achieving a total aquaculture production of 1 million 20 thousand tons by the end of 2025. This marks the first time the country has surpassed the 1 million ton barrier in its fisheries history.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, this record production level was made possible by significant increases in both aquaculture and fishing activities. Approximately 600 thousand tons were sourced from aquaculture, while 420 thousand tons came from marine and freshwater fishing.
The surge in production can be attributed to advancements in aquaculture practices, particularly for species such as sea bream, sea bass, and trout. Additionally, effective quota and stock management practices in marine and freshwater fishing contributed to this success, with sustainable fishing policies leading to a productive season, especially for species like anchovy.
This record production has positively impacted Turkey's aquaculture exports, with the country now exporting high value-added seafood products to various markets, primarily the European Union. Expectations are high that the sector's export revenues will approach billion-dollar levels.
Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have emphasized that this success was facilitated by encouraging investments in aquaculture. They reaffirmed their commitment to increasing production while maintaining sustainability and environmental balance in the future.
Sector representatives view surpassing the 1 million ton threshold as a strategic turning point, positioning Turkey among the leading aquaculture producers in the Mediterranean and Europe. This achievement not only highlights the production capacity of the Turkish aquaculture sector but also enhances its global competitiveness, fostering cautious yet optimistic growth expectations for 2026 and beyond.
