At least 11 dead and 31 injured when truck rushed into passengers boarding the "Likoni" in Mombasa. At least 11 people were killed in the morning of Jan 26, 2013, at 6.30 a.m. LT when a truck lost control and rammed into passengers boarding the "Likoni" in Mombasa. Its brakes failed then it lost control and hurtled down the ferry’s boarding ramp, running over the passengers and trapping people underneath it. Those that were trapped were rescued and more than 20 people have been evacuated. The death toll could still rise as many people remained trapped in the wreckage. The area traffic police dispatched a team to the scene. By 9 a.m. GMT ferry services across the channel had resumed, with authorities recording no further casualties. 31 people were injured in the accident. Most of the dead and injured were workers making their way from the Likoni mainland to the Mombasa Island across the busy crossing. Many of those injured were crushed in the stampede aboard the vessel that ensued after the initial impact. The driver of the truck was unhurt, but has been detained by police at the local police post for his safety. He had jumped out of the truck after the brakes failed and began to descend on a steep gradient towards the anchored ferry.
